Creating ELT Materials | Troika Immersion

 "English teachers create their own materials all the time. Sometimes they do that to complement a coursebook or attend students' specific needs. Other times they are frustrated with the materials they are supposed to use in class – or even have no materials at all! I truly believe teachers should be encouraged to create their own materials for the reasons mentioned above, but I also consider ELT materials writing as a golden opportunity for professional development."

Viviane Kirmeliene is a teacher, teacher trainer, ELT editor and materials writer. She holds a BA in English from the University of Sao Paulo, the CPE and the Cambridge ICELT. As an editor and writer, she has worked in a wide range of projects for publishers in Brazil and abroad.  She is one of the main authors of Stopwatch (Richmond), a series for secondary students, and of BeCome and Circles (FTD Educação), series for students in Ensino Fundamental and Médio in Brazilian public schools.  

She has also co-authored Brick by Brick (StandFor), a series for primary students which was an ELTons finalist in 2018. 

This six-hour course aims to be a brief introduction to materials development in ELT. We will start by discussing the skills and qualities of a good ELT materials writer and then move to a proposed set of principles to underlie their practice. We will also discuss characteristics of materials development for skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) and systems (grammar and vocabulary), as well as the use of authentic materials in the classroom. Towards the end of the course, participants will have a hands-on session, in which they will create a worksheet/lesson and receive feedback on their work.
