Accents are an essential part of people’s identity in a language. Still, oftentimes students (and teachers) do not feel proud of their own accents. In this course, we will promote a reflection about the concepts of Global Englishes and English as a Lingua Franca and their contributions to the teaching of pronunciation. Then, we will discuss the connection between one’s accent and their own identity; the processes that shape one’s identity in a new language; the influence of models on the media and course materials; and reflect about how we can work on the appreciation of learners’ identity to promote equality in learning. We will do some activities in the course that can be adapted to any lesson and also give suggestions of projects and materials to make sure everyone feels their accent is valued.

Akemi Iwasa, an academic consultant at Troika, has worked in ELT for the past 15 years, mainly with materials design and teacher education. She holds the Cambridge Delta 1, a BA in Languages (UFRJ), a postgraduate degree in Neuroscience (UFRJ) and she’s currently undertaking postgraduate studies in Human Rights and Corporate Social Responsibility (PUCRS).

Joyce Fettermann is an academic consultant at Troika, and has been in ELT for almost 15 years, in language institutes, public schools and higher education. Today, she has worked mainly with design of materials for bilingual education and teacher development. She holds a PhD and an MA in Cognition and Language (UENF), a postgraduate degree in English Language and a BA in Languages (Portuguese/English). She is also an author of books and articles about Language teaching and learning.
