Task-based language teaching -
but what about the grammar?

After questioning what we mean by ‘grammar’ and exploring insights gained from corpus linguistics, Jane will illustrate ways of incorporating these insights into the various stages of a task-based lesson. She will demonstrate a range of form-focussed activities that highlight aspects of grammar and lexical patterns occurring in the texts (spoken and written) used during the task cycle which then become part of the learner’s ‘pedagogic corpus’. She will summarise starting points for analysis activities which help learners identify useful forms, systematise and build on them and will suggest how to extend learners’ personal repertoire of language appropriate for global communication.

Exploring language in three dimensions

When we delve into learning and teaching English, we notice that language is something complex. This, however, doesn’t mean that our relationship with language has to be complicated or difficult. Something that can help us as teachers deal with language in the classroom is look at it from different perspectives. This course aims at exploring how teachers can look at language from three different yet related perspectives.

  • Day 3: We’ll explore language through learning and how it empowers learners and allows them to have more meaningful and personalized exchanges in English.

Why BIPOC Narratives and Storytelling Matter: The Value of Stories of Color to our World

Since the colonization of countries and continents of color began, BIPOC narratives, storytelling and the storyteller have been relegated to the "other" space, to the "less important" and 'invalid" places, thus re(dis)locating culture, cultural values, beliefs, voices and identities. Reclaiming our BIPOC narratives and relocating the role of storytelling in our teaching, and in our public and private sectors will not only challenge ingrained biases, but our narratives will enrich the world.

Are you ready for an assessment reform?

This course is not about how to create tests or mark papers. Nor is it about the cornerstones of testing or standardized assessment.
It is for teachers and instructional leaders who want to change their classroom assessment practices, with a view to reaching every student and guaranteeing equity, without losing sight of the necessary rigor.

Digital Literacy: What, When, Why

Every Sunday, the New York Times print edition features more information than the average person would have access to during a lifetime before the printing press was invented. Now, our news feed is updated several times a second and we are constantly bombarded with information wherever we look. Even bus stops and elevators may feature screens broadcasting the latest breaking news. How can we help our students navigate this sea of information and make relevant and appropriate choices? How do we help our learners become more critical thinkers and assess the validity and accuracy of information in a world of post-truth?

  • In our last meeting, we'll think of practical activities we can develop with our groups to engage them in critical thinking tasks that will encourage them to understand the impact of fake news in our lives.
