According to IBGE, Brazil has currently got 43 elderly people for every 100 children up to 14 years of age. By 2040 this scenario will be even more relevant, reaching a proportion of one elderly person for each child, and 173 for every 100 children by the end of 2060. Recent research by SPC Brazil points out that more than one-third of those over 60 who are already retired in Brazil are still working. This cohort of the population has been more and more active and its participation not only in the labour market but also in formal and informal education has been increasingly perceived. The presence of students aged 60 or more in regular language courses and in private language lessons has also increased. However, contrary to what is seen regarding language teaching for young learners or teens, there are very few available courses on teaching older learners. Teachers who want to improve their performance in language teaching for the elderly need to seek information, often contradictory, on blogs and websites.

Tutor: Heloisa Duarte is a graduated journalist with a postgraduate degree in interactive media and is currently finishing her MA in Language Education at NILE (Norwich Institute for Language Education). With more than twenty-five years' experience in ELT, working as a teacher, coordinator, materials writer, consultant and manager in national and international educational institutions, Heloisa has been specializing in teaching English to older learners. Her research includes the access of seniors to language courses, ageism, and ways to benefit the learning process of such students. The results of such research have benefited not only the seniors for whom Heloisa teaches English, but also several other language teachers, and consequently their students, with whom Heloisa has shared such information through workshops, talks and articles.
