Sobre o evento
Native speakerism is a widespread ideology in English language teaching that positions those perceived to be ‘native speakers’ as superior, not only linguistically, but also pedagogically. It leads to discrimination in recruitment where many jobs are advertised for ‘native speakers’ only. It also has a profound effect on how we teach the language, resulting in for example in a focus on ‘native-like’ pronunciation and a view of a ‘foreign’ accent as something negative. In this presentation we will focus on practical ideas and steps we can all take to tackle native speakerism.
