Developing soft skills through remote teaching

  1. Critical Thinking

Gabriel Ribeiro will discuss how critical thinking can be developed in an online environment. How can we ensure that students are engaged? How can we monitor them effectively? How can we allow for the free exchange of ideas when there are medium constraints? Join us in analyzing key aspects in the development of critical thinking skills and understanding how these skills can be fully activated through remote teaching.

Speaker biodata: Gabriel has a degree in Linguistics from the University of Sao Paulo. He is also a CPE and CELTA holder. Gabriel has been working with education for over ten years, teaching English as a Foreign Language at CELLEP and Red Balloon, Portuguese as a Second Language at CCBT, and proofreading materials for Somos. He is currently an academic consultant at Troika, focusing on teacher development, educational management and materials design.

     2. Enquiry Learning

Leticia Moraes will explore enquiry learning and how letting students pursue what ignites their intellectual curiosity does not mean allowing them to do as they please. What are the specificities of this education approach and what are their implications in an online learning environment? In this webinar, we will discuss what is being said about enquiry learning and how we can foster learner independence through remote teaching.

Speaker biodata: Leticia Moraes is a teacher, teacher trainer, materials writer and editor. She has been involved in ELT for more than 15 years. During this time, she has worked with all ages and levels, but in the last six years she has been dealing especially with secondary learners. She is an experienced speaker and article writer. She is a senior consultant at Troika, Joint Events Coordinators for IATEFL YLTSIG and a member of the C-group.

     3. Digital Literacy

Paulo Dantas will present key concepts of digital literacy and discuss how this skill can be developed through remote teaching. Does having students online for classes help or hinder efforts to make them deal with information that is obtained through digital platforms? What are the impacts of having students more in touch with technology in a wider variety of contexts to the process of teaching them how to deal with information available digitally? Come find out more about this and much more in this webinar.

Speaker biodata: Paulo Dantas is a managing partner at Troika, an education projects start-up. He has been involved in ELT for 13 years as a teacher, teacher educator, course designer, materials writer and coursebook editor; in the last few years, Paulo has explored ways in which technology and innovation impact teaching and learning and has developed apps, platforms and other digital products for language learning and teacher education. As an e-Learning specialist, he has served as international expert panelist for the Horizon Report Higher Education - International (2016, 2017) and its Brazilian version as well, Horizon.br. Having attended UFPE (Social Studies), Paulo holds the Cambridge ESOL DELTA and is currently reading for his M.A. in Professional Development for Language Education at the University of Chichester.
