Assessing Learning 101 - Online

Assessment is an essential part of the learning process, and yet it is still a field that teachers know little about,  disempowering them from promoting the necessary assessment reforms in their contexts.

By the end of this introductory course to assessment, participants will be able to:

- Differentiate testing and assessment.

- Identify the different types of tests and explain their purposes

- Defines the main cornerstones of testing and assessment

- Explain the difference between these practices and evaluate the circumstances and contexts in which one or the other should be adopted: accountability and classroom assessment, formal and informal assessment, summative and formative assessment, traditional and authentic assessment, holistic and analytic rubrics, instrument-based and competence-based assessment.

Most importantly, we hope that, by way of this "crash course" on assessment literacy, educators will be able to chart a path toward contemporary, evidence-based, and progressive assessment practices.

Tutor? Isabela Villas Boas holds a Master's Degree in Teaching English as a Second Language from Arizona State University and a Doctorate in Education from Universidade de Brasília. She is currently a Managing Partner at Troika. Before this, she was the Corporate Academic Manager at Casa Thomas Jefferson, Brasília, where she worked for 34 years. Her main academic interests are second language writing, teacher development, leadership, and assessment. She has presented in various local, national, and international ELT conferences and published articles in journals and book chapters for over twenty years. Her latest book is Getting into ELT Assessment, with Vinicius Nobre. She also supervises distance MA dissertations for the University of Birmingham.
